Whether or not you watched the famed Academy Awards last night, I’m sure you know how it works – nominees are announced and then the show presents the Oscars to the best in their category.  There are 5 important Internet Marketing  lessons that can be learned from this awards show…

The first one is to never give up.  Notice how they never say “and the winner is…” at awards shows.  At the Academy Awards last night, they said “And the Oscar goes to…”  Why?  Because they are all winners.  Just to be there, makes you a winner.  That is the first lesson to take away from the Academy Awards… just being in Internet Marketing makes you a winner.  If you quit after not “making it,” then you have no idea what was ahead, just beyond your current unsuccess.  Just because one avenue was not successful, doesn’t mean you can’t win.  Be in the game and you are a winner.

The next lesson is that it is not the resources that you have, it’s how resourceful you are.  The movie, The Shore, won an award for best short film.  This film was directed and produced by a father-daughter team with many friends and relatives as the movie crew.  In Internet Marketing, there is no such thing as “not being able to do this, because you don’t have that.”  Some of the most successful marketing campaigns are created and implemented on a shoestring budget, just like my latest one was!  So use the resources you have at your disposal and make them work for you.

Next, stay focused.  To be a successful Internet Marketer requires focus.  Focus on the tasks that move your business forward.  I spend about $200 a month on products and services that move my business forward.  They are all focused on my business.  Nothing bright and shiny that claims to make thousands overnight.  For instance, I purchased this List Building Challenge training (which I am also an affiliate for) because it moves my business forward.  And I want to build a list in a new niche into the thousands in under 2 weeks.

The fourth lesson is to always be prepared.  Do you notice how when the Oscar winner gets to the stage, some claim they haven’t prepared a speech?  Well, they have.  Who wouldn’t?  If you are honored to attend an event like that, you certainly have an idea in mind of what you would say on the stage if you do get an Oscar.  So with Internet Marketing, always prepare yourself for success.  Have an idea of what you are going to do the next day for your business.  Create a plan of action for marketing your latest blog post.  These little things make a huge difference both with your mindset and being able to look at the big picture.

The last Internet Marketing lesson to be learned from the Academy Awards is to always say thank you.  Don’t they all get to the stage and some of the first words they utter are “Thank you….”  Thank you really needs no explanation – Beginning as toddlers, we remind and groom children “What do you say?”  It’s an incredibly effective practice as adults as well.  Saying thank you to our friends, business partners, associates and mentors spreads gratefulness.  And one day, you will be the one providing the help to others and they will tell YOU “Thank you.”

So who says you can’t learn anything from watching mindless television?

Internet marketing is not a destination; it is a journey that winds and twists and has hills and valleys.  There will be good days and days you feel like you should have not even logged on.  Most important in this journey is just staying on the road.

Don’t step off or you’ll get side tracked.

And, dream big!

    Hi Christine,
For me it is about focus!
As you have said one of the beauties of an online business is that you have limited overheads. So when looking at ways to advance your business simple ask the question “will this add real value?” if the answer is no don’t waste your money.
There are so many shiny new toy offered each and every day and only a fraction of them actually work.
Look after your pennies and focus.
    Nice post!

  2. Christine -

Great list! I love how you tied it into the Oscars! AWESOME! I actually watched the award show (until I fell asleep :-) for the first time in many years!

Item #4: The fourth lesson is to always be prepared. I agree with this, but with one huge caveat – Be Prepared, but do not have it perfect! I have seen too many people prepare… And prepare… And Prepare… They are busy preparing, but getting nothing done!

Being prepared is important for sure, but it should be be debilitating! Get started, and get going!

    Thanks!
    Paul.
