Imagine getting hundreds of quality entries into your giveaway with the click of a mouse…

Or being able to share your latest blog post with one click…

As bloggers, online business owners and marketers, having an audience to speak to is vitally important.  It fact it makes all the difference in the world -

It’s really no fun writing all these great blog posts or setting up all these wonderful giveaways only to have no readers or to struggle to get entries to your latest giveaway event.

The fact is, having an audience, or having traffic, may be one of the top 3 on the list of having a successful site.

So what are you doing to build an instant audience for your blog?

Besides Facebook and Twitter, there is another source of instant traffic that more and more blog owners are using.

It’s called building a list of subscribers.

Building a list is just what it sounds like – creating list of people to communicate with.

So with the click of your mouse you can instantly send out your latest article or blog post and generate hundreds, or even thousands of readers!

List building is not something I have discussed before on Insightful Mommy, but I am curious to know where you stand on it -

Are you building a list of subscribers?

  3. Really cool topic, Christine!

If you’ve been over to Solo Mompreneur blog lately, you already know we’ve been discussing whether it’s a good idea to build your list by using a “freebie offer” as an incentive for someone to opt in as a subscriber … or NOT.

I’ve pitched my tent in the “NOT” camp.

I recently removed my freebie from my blog — although I’m keeping it on my home page, temporarily.

You can build a really awesome, highly targeted list of subscribers by simply giving your readers the opportunity to sign up to receive your blog updates and/or your newsletter.

Most coaches and mentors will teach you to create a freebie offer for list building but I’m here to tell you that approach can backfire. Some people have good luck using a freebie and the rest of us … well let’s just say … we get all the hardcore freebie seekers on our list who will never purchase anything … ever.

If you want to give away something for free …
Put your freebie on your “thank you page” AFTER people raise their hands with the desire to stay in touch with you.

The risk in giving away something cool to get people on your list is that every Tom, Dick, and Harry who are freebie chasers will get on your list, grab your complimentary offer, and then never open your emails again. :(

    In general …

List building is critical to having a successful business.

I’ve been blogging for about a year. I’ve been building my subscriber list ever since. The BEST thing I did to add subscriber is ASK people to sign up. At the end of each blog post, I ask the reader if they enjoyed the article and if they’ve learned anything. If they did, wouldn’t they want more? Signing up is easy, I tell them. Then I tell them how. This has worked great.

      Hi Dorien,

It’s amazing what just giving value and helpful information does for both your business and others businesses.

You’re right – value is key first!

      Thanks!

List building is something all business owners have to deal with and make a priority. But, too often, we get so involved with the build and the numbers, that we forget we need to provide something for that listee. It’s a balance.

Great post. I look forward to more. Glad to see you in our Blog and Comment Exchange.

      Hi Mallie,

Thanks for the great insights – some much truth to the idea of value.

What we give to others is far more important than what they give us.

      Thanks again!

Although I haven’t written a blog yet, I agree with Dorien about making it easy for subscribers to choose to be on your list.

  9. Right now we are currently adding mobile lists. We have both an opt in widget for websites and facebook, and a text in opt in. People are not reading their emails anymore, but they are reading their text messages. Thanks the the post!

Yes, reaching our audience in every way possible is important. My open and click rates through the email channel are still really good, but extending the reach is also my goal..

    Christine,

I agree – It’s all in the list. And yes, I am building my list.

At the same time, I’m not a fan of bombing people with my info. We all have lives, and I am not a fan of getting marketing messages from people every day or sometimes every week.

I’m reformulating how I will reach my list and how often I will communicate with them. I’ve found affiliate marketing enthusiasts to be invasive of my Inbox, and I’m pondering that heavily. Who do I compete with for attention, and how do I be the charmer, not the invader (rhetorical)?

    • Hi Keri,

I know what you mean – I think people are so focused on ‘the money is in the list” “the money is in the list” that they can’t see past their own goals. Moving towards putting yourself in the other person’s shoes and really asking what they NEED, rather than throwing all kinds of trash at them is a better answer –

      Thanks for the great insights!
