Did you think I was going to say easy?!
If you are new to Insightful Mommy, welcome, and let me fill you in -
My DH and I have made some money online. It was one of our first businesses and it was profitable. We recently sold it and are now doing it all over again with another business. Welcome to the journey!
On to making money with a blog…
Making money with a blog will be the hardest work you’ve ever done IF you don’t love what you blog about.
That idea has been completely and thoroughly tested by me, and I can tell you – blogging is very hard work if you are not enthused and excited to do it.
On the flip side, making money with a blog can be the most profitable and lucrative thing you’ve ever done. It all depends on how you approach your subject matter.
Early in our starting a business online journey, we went the route of starting a blog just to make money. Fortunately, it was in an area where we had experience, but unfortunately, the passion was just not there. We could share our knowledge with our readers, but it was not exciting to us.
That website is not even online anymore – it was in the health insurance niche and I let the domain go when it came up for renewal. An action I would never recommend, but the domain was freakishly long and we needed to move on.
But that first blog taught me a very valuable lesson about personal fulfillment and enjoyment, particularly when it comes to an online business.
Keeping that health insurance blog up was hard work. I was writing all the articles, which were very in-depth with very good content. We had the site optimized well. But made the newbie mistake of choosing a niche just looking to make money.
It did not work.
A blog should be such a great outlet, an escape from the daily “need to do this and need to do that.” It’s a place to connect with friends and meet others. It can serve as a reminder for you or even a photo album. The possibilities with a blog are endless.
We are even running our current business on one.
You can read here and here about what I have been focusing my online marketing efforts on.
If you blog about something you are not passionate about; making money with a blog will be hard work. Plus, readers can sense that sort of stuff. That’s the thing about passion – you can’t hide it, but you can’t fake it either!
Take our newest website, for example, our niche market is real estate. This is a niche we both have experience in and find incredibly interesting. It’s the prefect combination. We are in this site’s very infancy, but it is looking good.
Our previous business (the one I keep referring to as the profitable one), was in the baby niche and it was a niche that I absolutely loved. I had just had our DD, so working on a baby website was pure bliss.
The products, blogging about it, sharing it on Facebook, I enjoyed talking about it.
And, it was a profitable business -
Although the back office, admin stuff was boring, the enjoyment completely outweighed those tasks.
In the next few days, I’ll be sharing a lot with you about the journey with that website. So stay tuned!
But what about your blog? Do you enjoy what you blog about?
